Antibiotic Information

Your pet has just been prescribed oral antibiotics to take home. Occasionally animals can have a reaction to certain antibiotics. If you notice that your pet gets diarrhea, Please do NOT stop the antibiotics. Give 1 teaspoon of plain (non Flavored) yogurt to a pet 20lbs and under or 1 tablespoon to a pet over 20lbs twice daily. This should correct the problem. If it persists for over 48 hours please contact us. ( 772) 344-8800

The other slight problem with antibiotics is that occasionally some pets will develop a yeast infection in their ears. Please use ear cleaner twice weekly while your pet is on antibiotics and once weekly for several weeks following the antibiotic therapy. If you do not have a chlorohexidine ear solution please ask the front desk.

Most antibiotics are to be given with food. You can give a little canned food or if your pet has no food allergy you can give with a piece of bread or cheese. They tend to tolerate them better with a little food in their stomach.

A product called FortiFlora is also available at our hospital to use following any antibiotic therapy. This pro-biotic helps balance the flora in the digestive system after antibiotics. As always if you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us.
