Holistic treatment for Adrenal issues in Ferrets:
These are the ingredients:
Burdock Root | Slippery Elm Bark | Sheep Sorrel | Indian Rhubarb Root
It is usually called essiac formula or blend, or Cassie's formula. It is available under several brands, I usually find Gaia the easiest to find, they call it "sheep sorrel, burdock, Supreme". Most health food store carry this, but they may need to order it in. Any reputable brand is OK , as long as it has the above ingredients. I find the extracts work best for pet treatment. Because they are concentrated, you have to get less down them, and it's easier to hide. I know of a dog who got it soaked into his milkbone.
The dosages listed on the label are for 180# person, but this is extremely safe, even in higher doses. I went nuts when first formulating dose for ferrets, and diluted it. It's not necessary. With ferrets I begin with one drop in mornings, and one in evenings, mixed with ferretone. If ferret has adrenal sarcoma I add a drop of melatonin. As with most herbal treatment it is best to treat for two weeks on, one off. During the "by" week I administer one drop of golden seal / echinacia blend. This, by the way is much harder to get down the ferret, as golden seal tastes awful. Stir it into the ferretone well, they will get used to it. (Some of them anyway!!).
Assessing when to up the dose is really an art form. Leave on the above dose for at least 4 months. If you see symptoms start to get worse after that you can gradually increase to up to 4 -5 drops daily, depending on the ferrets size. It depends on how far along the cancer is when you begin treatment, how dramatic the results are. Take a picture just in case! You may not see any change, but I have seen several ferrets regrow all their hair in the next coat change, and live a normal lifespan, and die of other causes.
