Ear Infection

Your pet has just been diagnosed with an ear infection. Some of the success in treatments lies in the owner’s hands and by following our instructions, treatment failures or re-occurrence can be minimized.

1.  Following all directions on oral medications.

2.  Apply ear medication twice (2) a day. Place medication tube into the ear as far as you can and gently squeeze the tube. The way you know that you are using the proper amount is that the tube should last you 10days to 2 weeks. If half way through, you have half a tube left you are applying correctly. If you have more or less you will need to adjust accordingly.

3.  Massage the ear canal for five minutes with each application. The contact of medication to the yeast or bacteria is the key to success. The new, with the residual medication will mix and coat the ear very well.

4.  A re-check appointment must be scheduled for you. If the ear is not 100% better the infection can and WILL re-occur. You as the owner will not know if the ear is cured. This must be done with the Otoscope.

5.  Lastly preventative cleaning after the infection is important. Depending on the severity of the wax producing glands, as a defense they will continue to produce wax that if not cleaned could lead to re-occurrences.

So Remember that once a pet has had an ear infection, they are prone to re-occurrences. This will be maintained by following our treatment recommendations.
