The Spay and Neuter of your pet.

The Animal Hospital of West Port St. Lucie is an advocate of sterilizing pets for the best interest of their health, to control the rapid increase of the pet population and to avoid unwanted healthy pets from being euthanized. With this being said if you choose to breed your pet we will be happy to assist you through the process.

Not only do intact male dogs tend to run away, get hit by cars, mark territory in your house and are sometimes more aggressive they  are also more likely to get prostate infections and cancers. These problems are usually eliminated by having him neutered.

In the intact female dog we tend to see uterine, ovarian and breast cancers. The dog has many more mammary glands which cause a greater chance of breast cancer than a human. We also tend to see a high rate of uterine infections in the female dogs. These problems too can be eliminated by having your dog spayed.

The altering of your pet is an elective procedure. Based on the Doctor’s level of experience doing the surgery, choice of anesthesia and choice of pain medication the surgery should be very easy on the patient. Dr. Fox has done many, many of these procedures. He uses the safest anesthesia. Dr. Fox makes a very small incision to cause the patient the least amount of pain possible. We believe in using adequate pain management. We also do NOT assembly line our surgeries. We limit the number of procedures per day to allow for plenty of time between patients. Each patient recovers from surgery in the arms of a nurse. We call the patient’s parents immediately upon the patient fully waking up from the anesthesia. All of our routine spays and neuters are discharged from the hospital the very same day.

Please do not have this procedure done just anywhere as catastrophes can and do occur, It is important that you do feel comfortable that your pet is receiving the best possible care. Dr. Fox goes to great lengths to make sure all patients in the hospital are examined, vaccinated, and free from fleas, ticks and internal parasites to keep all patients safe.
